In an air-operated double-diaphragm AODD pump, the diaphragm is the single part that flexes millions of cycles while touching the fluid, so choosing it wrong gives you either chemical attack or early fatigue failure. Selection balances four things: chemical compatibility, flex life, temperature range and cost.
Where the fluid is a clean oil at controlled pressure rather than an aggressive chemical, a gear pump may be the simpler choice; but for corrosive or shear-tolerant fluids the AODD wins, and the diaphragm material is what makes it reliable.
PTFE is the broad-compatibility default. It is almost chemically inert, so it handles aggressive acids, hot caustics, and chlorinated or aromatic solvents that destroy elastomers. The trade-off is that PTFE is stiffer, giving slightly lower flow, and has a shorter flex life, so it is usually backed by a Santoprene support diaphragm.
Santoprene is the workhorse elastomer: excellent flex life, good abrasion resistance and a wide temperature range, compatible with many acids and caustics at a practical cost. It is the go-to whenever PTFE-grade compatibility is not required.

Selecting the diaphragm is only half the job; every wetted part must survive the same fluid. The valve balls and seats, the manifolds and the O-rings all contact the product, so a PTFE diaphragm paired with an incompatible ball or seat will still fail at the weakest part. Build the specification as a set — body, diaphragm, balls, seats and elastomers — and check each against the fluid at its real concentration and temperature.
Temperature deserves special attention, because a material that is compatible cold can soften or embrittle hot, and a diaphragm’s flex life falls as temperature rises. Where a fluid swings in concentration or temperature through a batch, specify for the worst case, not the average. Keep a matched spare kit for each pump so a diaphragm change is a quick, correct swap rather than a scramble for parts. Pick PTFE for aggressive or hot chemistry where broad compatibility matters, and Santoprene for longer flex life on fluids it is compatible with. PTFE is often backed by Santoprene to combine both.
Santoprene has the best flex life among common options, followed by Neoprene, Nitrile, EPDM and Hytrel. On compatible fluids it outlasts PTFE.
Nitrile handles oils, fuels and greases well, but avoid it with strong oxidisers, where PTFE or a suitable elastomer is safer.
