Understanding the working principle of a rotary gear pump helps you select the right unit and maintain it effectively. Here is a step-by-step breakdown of the operating cycle:

Fluid Enters at the Inlet

As the gears rotate and unmesh on the inlet side, expanding cavities between gear teeth create a low-pressure zone. This draws fluid in from the suction port smoothly — no priming required for most viscous fluids.

Fluid is Trapped and Carried

The fluid is captured within the pockets formed between each gear tooth and the pump casing. As the gears rotate, this trapped volume is carried around the outer casing — from the low-pressure inlet toward the high-pressure outlet.

Gears Re-mesh and Build Pressure

At the outlet side, the gear teeth come back into mesh, squeezing the fluid out of the tooth pockets and forcing it through the discharge port under controlled, consistent pressure — up to 70 kg/cm² in our UA Series.

Relief Valve Operation

Built in pressure relief valve is provided in pumps to operate at higher than rated pressure i.e. it starts operating at 1 kg/cm² higher than rated pressure and fully opens 20% higher than rated pressure, taking maximum 30% higher power than rated power.
